Happy Father's Day

I originally was going to just post a blog around the time of the Summer Solstice, coming up this Wednesday.  However, I feel compelled to write a couple of lines here on this day, which in most parts of the world has come to an end anyway.

There were many slogans today, such as, "To all the dads out there..." and other variations thereof.  

I'm going to retort regarding such a commonplace yet naïve statement.  We live in a world where the celebration of a day, like Father's Day brings about rosy and infallible images of a biological father doing no wrong.  If you read the word "biological", you may already know what's coming next.

Just because someone got someone pregnant, doesn't make them a good father.  Even being around to take care of the mother of the child (or perhaps children, if there are twins, triplettes, etc.), and help raise the child(ren) doesn't make that person a good father.  We can even go to the far extent, and say that THINKING they are a good father does NOT make them a good father.  

Why?   

While, given the attempt to parent a child or children is better than abandoning one's post to civil obligation, doing such things in and of itself doesn't necessarily bring about the RESULTS of them turning out to be the "good people" we want them to be.  The whole debate about what is a good person in this context will need to rest in perhaps another blog.  Speaking about that, parenting does not make one a good person.  Since they brought a new living being into this world, it is their DUTY to raise the child or children to the best of their ability, even if it means raising them WRONG.  

So, "To all the dads out there", best of luck.  Don't fuck this up!
